About

Flares OFX is a physically-based lens flare plugin built on the OpenFX standard. It is designed for feature-film, episodic, and high-end commercial pipelines where predictability, stability, and visual fidelity are critical.

At first glance, Flares OFX may appear complex or technical and that is intentional.

The plugin exposes a wide range of controls to support:

  • physically plausible behavior
  • deterministic rendering
  • deep artistic customization
  • scalable studio workflows

Rather than hiding complexity behind presets, Flares OFX is designed to give artists and technical directors full visibility and control over how flares are generated, positioned, and rendered.

This documentation is written for:

  • Compositors working in feature film and episodic production
  • Look-development artists refining lens behavior
  • Technical directors integrating the plugin into pipelines
  • Studios requiring offline, deterministic, or shared-license setups

While no prior knowledge of optical simulation is required, a basic familiarity with HDR imaging and compositing workflows is recommended.

The documentation is structured to support both:

  • Linear reading - starting from installation and working through workflows
  • Targeted reference - jumping directly to specific features or parameters

If you are new to the plugin, start with Getting Started. If you are integrating Flares OFX into a production pipeline, review the Licensing, Lens Systems, and Pipeline Integration sections.
